The Billabong Koala Family
FATHER ROLF BILLABONG and his wife Matilda run the Tree House Nursery where all the Sylvanian toddlers come and play. Rolf is a bit of a unique character. His favourite time of the day is sunrise and he can often be found humming to himself, and making up crazy songs with no real meaning at all! However, all the toddlers enjoy his lessons as he mixes painting and singing together! All the children have their own instruments and are encouraged to beat their drums, shake their rattles and blow their whistles in time to his music. But as you can imagine, the happy din gets all mixed up so that everyone knows in Sylvania when Rolf is giving his music lessons. He also likes to paint on a grand scale – little paint pots and brushes are no good to him. 'Big and bold, that's the way it should be!' he says and can often be found going into grandfather Ernest Evergreen's inventing shed to borrow household paint pots and brushes! The paint gets splished, splashed on, this way and that way, going everywhere but on the canvas and then if he can't decide what his painting will turn out to be, he asks his class!!
MOTHER MATILDA BILLABONG teaches the children a few basics like counting and the alphabet in preparation for Aristotle's school. As well as being a really fun grown-up to play with, Matilda is an amazing cook. She makes lunches for the toddlers at the Nursery and her best recipe is for biscuits which don't ruin your appetite and sweets that won't harm your teeth. As a treat, the toddlers are given one of her biscuits to have with their mid-morning milk.
BROTHER CLIVE BILLABONG is not the sporty type but he does love talking about sport. In fact he can keep an audience amused for hours talking on a range of subjects from what's on TV to what's happened in the village recently. His mother jokes that he is turning into the village gossip!
SISTER GERMAINE BILLABONG is perhaps the brightest girl in the school. Unlike her brother she prefers to write her thoughts down rather than talk about them. Her diaries each year are twice the size of other Sylvanians as she writes so much in them.
BABY SISTER KYLIE BILLABONG is the cutest but the noisiest little Koala you have ever seen. She takes great care in her appearance and always likes her mother to dress her up in the latest fashion. She loves to sing at the top of her voice and wants to be a popstar when she grows up. Little though she is, she is always practising her favourite dance routine in front of the mirror.
BABY BROTHER JASON BILLABONG is quite the opposite of his sister. He always has his head in a book – usually one about dinosaurs and when he gets older he wants to become a famous fossil hunter and historian. He is a bit of a softy really and likes nothing better than to snuggle into his mother's neck while she is carrying him about in her papoose. He likes to help out in the Treehouse garden, the only thing is, that he has not learned to distinguish yet between flowers and weeds. He once thought he was giving his mother a great treat by picking some pretty flowers from the garden, but the bunch of flowers was actually a bunch of weeds. Matilda did laugh to herself but thanked him all the same.
The Billabong family were first released back in 1994, as a family of four in the UK. The family originally consisted of the parents and baby figures. The US release of the family did come with the brother and sister, and that version of the family is highly sought after. When the family got a re-release in 2010, the brother and sister were added to the family. They wore different clothes to the original release. You could also buy just the brother and sister online from the Sylvanian Families shop in London, if you already had the original release. With the original release, the parents came with a papoose each so as to carry the babies. The 2010 re-release did not have these.
